EXCLUSIVE: In their only broadcast debate, Democratic Rep. Andre Carson and Republican challenger Carlos May clashed sharply on a wide variety of issues during a formal debate Monday. The two men in the race for the 7th Congressional District seat appeared in a special edition of Afternoons with Amos. At times the discussion between Rep. Carson and Mr. May was heated with May charging that Carson had ignored residents of the district by refusing to appear at a number of appearances. Carson blasted May for standing quiet while racial groups were insulted during a another local radio program. Both Rep. Carson and Mr. May clashed on Social Security, how to bring jobs to the district, Afghanistan and Iran, health care reform, how to handle the growing Federal deficit, immigration, education, mass transit and much more. At times moderator Amos Brown had to rein both candidates in keeping them on time and focused. Some sixteen different issues were brought up, discussed and debated during the fast paced debate hour.
