Report Shows Mentally Ill People Have No Problem Buying Guns (thumbnail)

The National Rifle Association convention gets underway Friday in downtown Indianapolis. The three-day event, planned by the organization, will feature displays by gun makers, seminars, meetings, a “Stand Up and Fight” Rally and a country music concert. Seventy-thousand people are expected, including opposition from the other side of the gun rights debate.

Mothers from across the country are making their voices heard at this weekend’s NRA convention. WXIN-TV reported the group ‘Everytown for Gun Safety’ has the support of businessman and the former mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg. They also have tens of millions of dollars in backing.  The group has roots here in Central Indiana stemming from the brainchild of a stay-at-home mom, Shannon Watts, who was so moved by the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown that she formed ‘Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America’ which was a catalyst to take the organization to the next level. ‘Everytown’ is currently identified as the NRA leadership’s “nightmare.” Members say they’re planning events for the convention all weekend.

The NRA considers itself the premier firearms education organization in the world and the leading defender of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which protects the rights of individuals to keep and bear arms. To learn more about the NRA, click [HERE].

Gun violence has impacted Indianapolis significantly with the city’s homicide rate on-target to increase over 2013′s startling totals. A collaborator of ‘Everytown’ wants to motivate you into action to work in your community by demanding a plan from political leaders to stop the violence on the streets. Check out their video!
