There is a new artist, a gospel rap artist, who is making waves on the Billboard Charts. Heesun Lee, a Korean American, recently released her sophomore album ‘Stereotypes’ and I must say after taking a listen to a few of her songs, I am a fan! Lee’s album debuted on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums at #25.
After being adopted at four months and growing up with a Christian home in New Jersey in the 1980s, Lee fell in love with hip-hop. She admits that hip-hop saved her life. “Hip Hop saved me from a lot of things,” she confesses. “My biggest struggle growing up was with my identity and it all correlates with being stereotyped and not knowing where I belonged because I was adopted.”
Heesun Lee is using her latest piece of work to discuss the stereotypes in society that we are currently dealing with. “Sometimes the stereotypes in this world are so big that they can even get to my own confidence. I may think I’m good, but I can just be playing myself if society is telling me this is not what I should be doing.”
