ivy tech logoIt’s Indiana’s largest post second school of learning. It’s Ivy Tech Community College with over 200,000 students in 75 locations across the Hoosier State.  Ivy Tech is a school not just for 17-19 ya year olds who just graduated from high school, but increasingly its a school for adults to get the skills they need to keep or obtain the higher skilled jobs in today’s changing economy.  In his first visit to Afternoons with Amos in several years, Ivy Tech President Thomas Snyder talked with Amos and Listeners about Ivy Tech’s mission and how its adapting to changing education standards and its mission to educate Hoosiers and training Indiana workers. During the interview Snyder talked about one of Ivy Tech’s roles which is feeding students from high school through their first year of college at Ivy Tech and then moving on to one of the state’s universities.  Snyder talked about the increasing amount of on line classes and courses at Ivy Tech, but stressed that in class instruction was also a major part of the curriculum.  Snyder talked about the school’s diversity. Ivy Tech has the most diverse student body of any public post secondary school in the state.  Snyder acknowledged that the increasing complexity of college level algebra was holding back some students who weren’t planing a college career. So, Ivy Tech has changed their math requirements. Good news for those pursuing nursing and other non college or job careers. Listeners talked with Snyder about their experiences, concerns and questions about Ivy Tech.  Snyder also revealed that Hoosiers over aged 65 who are retired can attend Ivy Tech classes for free. Serving older adults, those over 50, is another of Ivy Tech’s many educational missions.  Click the Arrow to hear Amos’ full interview with Ivy Tech President Thomas Snyder.
