Testimony On HJR-3 Begins In Senate
The fight over a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage continues at the Indiana Statehouse. The Senate Rules Committee is scheduled to hear testimony from people on both side of the issue today. If it’s passed, the proposal heads to the full Senate for consideration. The House passed the amendment nearly two-weeks ago, but removed the second sentence that would have outlawed civil unions.
One Dead In Drug Deal
Indianapolis police say one man is dead and two are in jail after a botched drug deal. A SWAT team responded to the Regal 8 Inn on West Washington Street on Saturday. Authorities believe Dustin Woods and another man were robbed by Eric Johnson and Alejandro Mauricio. Woods was shot in the head and died Sunday in Eskenazi Hospital. Mauricio barricaded himself inside a house on North Temple Avenue for several hours before SWAT members took him into custody.
Indiana Gets Education Grant
Indiana is getting a federal grant to help low-achieving schools improve. Education officials say the state is getting the lion’s share of 39-million dollars. The money goes to campuses showing the greatest commitment to turn around persistently low performance levels.
Star College Football Player Comes Out of Closet Before NFL Draft
A college football All-American is telling the world he’s gay. Missouri star football player Michael Sam told viewers he is openly gay and proud on Sunday’s ESPN’s “Outside the Lines.” The Southeastern Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Year says he told his teammates and coaches in August of last year but waited to go public. But says the time is now because he wanted to tell his own story versus being outted. He could be the first openly gay player in the NFL. The draft is May 8th.
Pacers in Action Monday Night After Road Loss
The Pacers’ winning streak is now over. The Orlando Magic overcame a 17-point deficit on Sunday to beat the Pacers 93-to-92. The team is back home to take on the Denver Nuggets Monday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. EST.
