Board members of the Indianapolis Public School system voted to cut more than 100 jobs from the district last night.
Most of the jobs impacted were administrative positions, but board members said about 30 middle school and high school positions will be affected.
The board said the cuts were necessary to save IPS $10 million.
Board members narrowed their search down to three superintendent candidates Tuesday afternoon. They were expected to name a successor to Eugene White as early as Saturday.
IPS Names 3 Superintendent Finalists
The Indianapolis Public School search for the next superintendent has been narrowed down to three candidates.
The candidates are Thomas Darden, the executive director of New York schools for ASPIRA, Inc.; Lewis Ferebee, chief of staff for Durham Public Schools; and Millard House, CEO of the Charlotte-Mecklenberg schools.
The finalists will have second interviews later this week, with a successor to Eugene White to be selected as early as Saturday.
52 percent of the 29,000 students enrolled at IPS are African-American, and so are all of the finalists.
6 Year Old Drowns In Apartment Pool
A 6-year-old girl drowned in a pool at an apartment complex on the city’s north side last evening. The incident happened in the 9000 block of North College Avenue at the Lakeside Pointe apartment complex around 6 O’Clock.
Workers pulled the child out of the water and performed CPR until first responders arrived before she died at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.
Officials said the child’s mother was at work the child was under the care of a babysitter who let her walk to the pool by herself.
Alligator On The Loose in Castleton?
The DNR is investigating reports of an alligator on the city’s north side. Conservation Officers say the reptile was first spotted on June 7th at a retention pond near The Pyramids and has since been seen two other times. The alligator is reportedly four to six feet long and officials say doesn’t pose a significant risk.
