Despite Indianapolis’ $65 million budget deficit for 2013, a coalition of Indianapolis church congregations is urging city officials to invest $500,000 in next year’s budget to fund a new violence prevention initiative. IndyCan appeared on Afternoons with Amos to tout a violence prevention strategy called Ceasefire that would target an estimated twenty violent groups in the city allegedly responsible for the bulk of Indy’s violent crime.  The plan is patterned after an effort in Indianapolis 14 years ago in Haughville and Martindale-Brightwood called “Safe Streets” operated by the then Indianapolis Violence Reduction Partnership. Which was patterned after an effort in Boston created by the original Boston Ten Point Coalition. IndyCan leaders Carolyn Higginbotham, Alex Slaboski, Steve Lattimore, Angela Eubanks and IndyCan coordinator Shoshana Spector explained their plan to listeners and the community and how it would work.
